What do acoustic consultants actually do
General April 5th, 2009
Sound pollution is becoming quite a huge problem in many built-up areas these days and recently I’ve started to think that maybe an acoustic consultant could do something to attenuate noise levels.
As it happens, incessant noise pollution is not such a problem as sudden peaks & troughs although in the workplace, steady noise that isn’t particularly loud is often a problem and give rise to hearing loss.
One of the most significant human aspects of noise is that it has a detrimental impact on sleep and incessant low level sleep deprivation is bad for psychological and thus physical health.
For an Acoustic consultant this will be familiar territory. Acoustic engineers use the latest acoustic apparatus to measure noise levels and identify sources of noise. By designing buildings to absorb noise energy they are able to significantly enhance the quality of life for anyone in the vicinity and thus improve their health as well.
A common problem is due to jet plane sound levels, particularly near busy international airports like London Heathrow where jets fly in low over densely populated areas. Even though there usually are controls on landing and take-off times, busy international and national airports effectively operate nearly twenty-four hours a day. Noise consultants are sometimes being used by airport noise objectors now to record sound levels and then to act as expert witnesses in environmental impact studies.
